Gaz lives in Minnamurra, NSW and has trade certificates in Metal Fabrication and also Ceramics (inc Sculpture/Drawing). This is his third exhibition for Willo. When asked to create work for the first exhibition in Kiama, his question was “can I chop my bat into pieces for a sculpture”, showing his lack of reverence for the game of cricket and preference for sculptural works.
Gaz has shown his work in group shows over the years in Wollongong/Kiama and sold private commissions. “For this exhibition I have used all of the bat with the addition of a recycled timber base and stainless steel assembly. My inspiration has been movement and space.
All of the steel is industry waste and I especially like the ‘scarred’ horizontal bar, reminding me of the ‘scars’ on a well worn bat.
As for the dissected bat, it is used structurally to support the work only, so is recognisable, but not obvious. I enjoy altering its iconic shape. I am grateful to be able to support this fine cause”.
